As African Americans we DO need to buy from one another because in most cases, we are our only customers especially in our communities. Everyone else shops with their own and when we don't shop with OUR own, we undermine OUR economic stability. This is one reason we have such a high unemployment rate: No flourishing businesses equal no jobs or industry.

I am a travel agent as well, I sponsor trips in my local community at very affordable rates right, its like pulling teeth to get a dollar out of them. The one thing I take issue with is your statement that dancing to this kind of music "can lead to rape". Women's behaviour does not lead to rape. Men's behaviour leads to rape. A woman can dance to whatever she wants to, shake whatever she wants to shake. It does not give a man a licence to attack her. Men have been using this kind of argument for millennia, rather than take responsibility for their own actions. It's time for women to stop taking the rap for rape.  less

When I come across blatant spelling errors and speak up, the first thing that happens from others perspective is instantaneous anger. From my standpoint, how can you take a writer seriously if he or she can't seem to grasp or get a decent handle on the English language? Another erroneous error I am seeing are those who put a question mark at the end of a (period) ending statement. Where in the world did that mess ever come from? Why is it that we have a (very) hard time with constructive criticism? No harm, no foul. This is just my *humble* opinion.    less

Monique, thanks for your comments and for sharing about your experience. Time was Black parents and teachers made sure the children in the community worked hard, and believed in ourselves. What has happened? How and why have we started to lose this? Standards be slippin' all over the place these days! I am so glad to hear you are still practicing those principles in your work.

I agree with you about Kwanzaa, Deborrah. Kwanzaa principles should be observed every day, not just for one week of the year. These are guidelines to live by. And Monique, I talked about Kwanzaa on my radio show. We do need to be talking about this more in our communities. Kwanzaa is now observed by people all over the world. http://ancestralenergies.blogspot.com/2011/12/black-talk-radio-kwanzaa-do-black.html

B Ra, we each have enormous power and influence. The problem is we often do not use the influence we have.
