Dwann Olsen So would you say the same thing about you son if he marries this white young lady? At what point can you discern that Taye hates himself but your son doesn't ...sounds like a dichotomy and somewhat ignorant. No problem agreeing to disagree on this one.

Even when I was a NEWS ANCHOR, it was more about how I connected with the audience THEY wanted me to connect with and it even came down to having to wear clothes, make-up, hair, etc ..that were approved by the INDUSTRY EXECUTIVES. Of course we know all this once we get in the business but ...it is ...what it is and unfortunately, it is definitely not as cut and dry or as easy as one might think. Although I do I understand your concern etc ...way more than you may thing ...having been married to a white male for 14 years and ...having also completed the manuscript on a children's book that is geared towards a multi-cultural audience.  less

What about African, Caribbean, Latin and Afro-European literature? Our experiences will be always be limited if we take on the attitude of, nothing exists beyond our shores. Africans all over the world have so much to learn from and teach to, one another. First we'll have to acknowledge that we all fall under the category of Africans and we have to accept our family on the continent and the rest of the world and they'll have to accept us. There is an amazing amount of art being created all the time by US but if WE don't recognize it then we're losing our legacy. We all have to make more effort to develop ways to exchange and promote African arts among our fellow Africans and the rest of the world if we want to see our artists gain the recognition that they deserve.  less

Just venting a little, but I know all is not lost. I've heard rave reviews about Ernessa T. Carter's "32 Candles" Has anybody read it? You are so right!  I hate going into my local bookstore and walking over to the African American Lit section only to find Toni Morrison hidden behind 80000 copies of "Candy Licker" and "Welfare Wifeys".   Rotflmao!
