Why do our youth feel the need to fight, kill and have no remorse for what they have done.. I know the first thing we think is home training, but how can a parent teach their child about good choices when the Parents have no clue either. Parenting programs have not been effective due to the fact that most parents with out of control youth say I  don't need parenting classes, I'm a good Mother.. When they know deep down that they have failed that child and may fail the other children they have. I wrok in a School and when  the Mother comes to the School for their childs behavior, they are wearing pj's, house shoes, short skirts, cleavage showing, cell phone ringing while they are in the meeting. The first thing that flies out the mouth is he/she never does that at home, really so why are they doing this here?  less

I have been thinking about this topic my Husband and I have been having with our 15 yr. STD's, The Teenagers in these times have the highest rate of STD's even HIV. Everytime I read an article about teens, I see the percentage is rising. This topic became very important to us, because a very good Family Friend 14 yr. old daughter has received positive test results for HIV.. I would like Parents,Grandparents, etc. to really get this imformation into the minds of the Teens, get them to understand that unprotected sex, even oral sex can have great effects on their futures.  less

I work in a Elementary School, I find that a lot of the Scholars parents are very young and have no clue on how to communicate with Teachers, some seem to be very angry and will be quick to say "MY CHILD WILL NEVER DO ANYTHING LIKE THAT!" OR  HE/SHE HAS NEVER DONE THAT AT HOME"!. They probaly have not done that in your presence but away from you their is no telling what they might say or do.. I watch how they use their body language, the tone in their voice, and most importantly the way they are standing, this is when the yelling and cursing begans, the child standing next to Mom listening to the curse words, the hatred of the School, and you just don't like my child.. Do they really know that this type of behavior is being absorbed by the child?  less

I expressed to them the importance of reading. I found that majority of the Scholars have never had to read during Summer break. I would like to take this time to encourage all Parents to have their child pick up a book and read it with them.. Spending this kind of time with your child/ren will benefit their future and they may even want to read without being told.

I hear girls talking about wearing push-up bras, thong panties, eye shadow, eye liners, I mean these are Elementary School girls. They are wearing high heels, and talking about who their boyfriends are. These are young girls, they should not be wearing and doing these kind of things. If the girls only think of make-up and high heels, so do the mothers. The fathers are usually somewhere else. When a father is present in his daughter's life, she doesn't act that way. There's a lot of talk about boys needing their fathers, but girls need their fathers too. Maybe those girls are focused on make-up and high heels because they are not getting attention for their intelligence or creativity. Very few people push black girls to excel academically; so they believe they have to be beautiful. However, every adult who comes in contact with our daughters has influence over what they do. If I were teaching elementary school and a girl came in wearing heels and make-up, I would say something about it. I don't know how many times I have told my high school students that adults have a responsibility to protect their innocence. "Just because you look grown doesn't mean you are. You're just tall, that's all." Some ...    less

I hear all the time "Don't try to tell what to do with my child." So I have to leave it in the hands of the Building Admin. I always revert back to when I was growing up in a home with both parents and 4 brothers that monitored everything I did as a little girl, teenager,. I worry because these young ladies are subject to Men approaching them, taking advantage of them, using and abusing them in every way possible. I do believe that if they had their Father's in their lives then it would make a big difference. It really does take a Village, but do some believe that.  less

This is a very important process for Youth who want to go to College and achieve success. I tell the Scholars I work with that even with their disablilities they can achieve anything. What about African, Caribbean, Latin and Afro-European literature? Our experiences will be always be limited if we take on the attitude of, nothing exists beyond our shores. Africans all over the world have so much to learn from and teach to, one another. First we'll have to acknowledge that we all fall under the category of Africans and we have to accept our family on the continent and the rest of the world and they'll have to accept us. There is an amazing amount of art being created all the time by US but if WE don't recognize it then we're losing our legacy. We all have to make more effort to develop ways to exchange and promote African arts among our fellow Africans and the rest of the world if we want to see our artists gain the recognition that they deserve.  less
