  BBC members have expressed love for many different authors. Which author do you identify with the most?

  I wanted to imply I like Carter G. Woodson.
  I'm a teacher and blogger, his two books: "The Mis-Education of the Negro" and "The Education of the Negro" should be read by Middle and High School students to show how blessed they are to even be in school and have an opportunity to be educated. Maybe if more Afrian American students read these books they would do better in school...

  Toni Morrison. Her ability to write of the experience of the African American in a spiritual and humanistic lane is unmatched (in my opinion). Most of my favorite works of fiction have come from her mind.

  Yes Nikki, I have not read any Toni Morrison books, but I have heard alot of good things about the writing. I never thought of it, but how much do you think our writing as bloggers is influenced by the people we read?? Both on an emotional side and psychological side?

  well i'm a poet and writer first, and a blogger last. i think the authors i read have, over the course of my life, greatly enhanced my world view and perspective, which in turn, has offered me a deeper well of knowledge to draw from.

  Can I have two:)? Toni Morrison and Zora Neale Hurston. I realize I may be old school, but I love these two writers work with all my heart.
  
  Zora because of the sheer natural talent and the variety of personality concoctions she thought up, (She was also a Folklorist!). And Toni because of her talent along with the skill level she amassed to so vividly paint a picture in the readers mind. Also Toni's language and straight-forwardness is so poignant that it's transcendent, it lifts you up off the page and you feel her message.

  From reading everyones post it seems that the writers of today are fewer and not as attached emotionally and culturally to the community.
  I related more to the old school like April said because there seemed to be more of a purpose, the writing not just for self glorification or money. The writing is or was
  for the people.

  I have many favorites, each according to the several facets of my Being. I would say, Thoth/Hermes Trismegistus, the "Divine Pymander/Mind" is my most favorite book. Next I love the Metu Neter series, by Ra Un Nefer Amen. I love Ivan Van Sertima's books. I have all of Cheikh Anta Diop's books. I like R A Schwaller De Lubicz and his wife Isha's books. Pretty much, my focus is on history and spirituality.

  @steven I was reading online about Thoth/Hermes and others you mentioned.
  They are very interesting in their relationship and connection to Egypt, Spirituality and Religion.
  Peeked my interest to read more.. Thnx for sharing

  I would definitely have to say Maya Angelou. Not just because she is an all-around renaissance woman. Her ability to capture a story in the purest and most honest of form inspires me to push harder.

  I was listening to the DVD about Malcolm X and learned that Maya Angelou know Malcolm X very well. They were good friends and met together on their travels especially when Malcolm X went to African. Very cool She taught in several African countries and is very well traveled and cultured.

  Has anyone heard of Ben Okri? He's a Nigerian author who wrote one the most most intriguing books I've ever read, The Famished Road.
  
  I also noticed that many of us are mentioning the well known writers. Any other favorites that some of us might be introduced to for the first time?

  Over the holiday I read Zora and Me

  by Simmons and Bonds,
  
  Really good by two talented women.
  This is the first book about Zora Neal Hurston that is
  not by the author or the Hurston group.
  

  They gave the ok for them to write the book about
  the author and it is really good.

  I absolutely love Maya Angelou. Her conservational writing style and sincereity reminds me of my grandmother who is long gone, but never forgotten.

  I have 4:

   

  Francine Rivers: She has a strong annointing on her writing. I knew for sure I wanted to get married after reading Redeeming Love. I also knew for sure that God loves us no matter what we do or what is done to us.

   

  Claudia Mair Burney: There's a reason she does what she does. Exceptional story teller, awesome love story/murder mystery plots. 

   

  Michelle McKinney Hammond: She got me through many a single year.

   

  Tyora Moody: quiet, humble business woman...and can write a wonderful "who done it" plot.
